Coolant

Car Coolant Leak Repair Atlanta

What is Car Coolant

Car Coolant is the mixture of fluid that absorbs heat from the engine and then dissipates it through the radiator for the purpose of cooling automobile engines. This heat is also dispersed through the heat exchanger in the cabin of your vehicle when you crank your heat when temperatures fall. Car Coolant is a standard mixture of ethylene or propylene glycol (aka Antifreeze) and water, usually in a 50/50 ratio. Without coolant, your engine will overheat and if left unattended severe engine damage will occur.

Car Coolant Leaks

Coolant leaks are a lot more common than you expect. How do you know when you have a Coolant leak? It is very easy to check the levels of Coolant in your engine, and it is something you should do a couple times a year to make sure there are no leaks in your system. Your Coolant only needs to be changed every two or three years (you will find that information on the container of Antifreeze/Coolant and you should follow the manufacturers recommendations for that.)

If your Antifreeze/Coolant is low consistently after refilling it, it means you may have a leak. The leak could be in the radiator or the heater core itself, but is most commonly found in one of the hoses or clamps. Have this checked, or check it yourself. If the fluid level in the radiator system is low or empty, your engine will over heat and it could cause severe to permanent damage to your car engine.

Safety Tip for Pet Owners and Animal Lovers

Antifreeze has a sweet aroma and taste, which pets find particularly appealing. As little as a half teaspoon of the stuff can kill an average-size cat, and eight ounces will do in a 75-pound dog. There’s no substance that you can add to antifreeze to make it less appealing to animals, but antifreeze made with propylene glycol instead of the usual ethylene glycol is about a third as toxic. Propylene glycol is sold under the brand names Sierra, Prestone Low Tox and Texaco PG.
