How the Heater System works
To warm the passenger cabin of your cabin, the heating system uses the excess heat from the engine internal combustion process. The engine of your automobile generates a lot of excess heat which if not adequately removed, will eventually destroy your engine. It is the cooling system in the vehicle that removes this destructive and dangerous heat.
The exhaust also plays a part in removing this excess heat. However, the majority of the excess heat is absorbed by a circulating liquid coolant, which is combination of antifreeze and water. This heated liquid coolant is carried from the engine through tubes to the radiator, which transfers the heat to the open air. That heat transfer reduces the temperature in the liquid coolant, which is then circulated back to the engine and the process begins again and so forth.
The radiator that is located at the automobile’s front grill transfers heat to the passenger cabin that is located in the dashboard. This unit serves as a mini-radiator and is referred to as the heater core. The heated liquid that circulates through the tubes in the heater core has a heater fan that blows across little fins encasing the tubes, directing warm air through the heating vents into the passenger cabin.
How the Heater System can break down
Due to the car heating system working off its cooling system, heating system breakdowns often occur as a result of problems in the cooling system. The heater core in your vehicle is similar to the radiator in the front of your car. It does in fact look like a miniature radiator. The difference being that the heater is mounted inside the car and air is blown through the fins of the core. The heater hoses transfer engine coolant from the engine to the heater core, allowing the heat from the engine coolant to be utilized to warm the cabin of your automobile.
When a heater system breaks down, the common problems that cause it are:
• When a vehicle is low on coolant to the point where the heater ceases to function
• When the car is running bubbles start running through the heater core, (making a sound like a fish tank) this is due to air becoming trapped inside the heater core, in time the air should dissipate to silence the noise
Other potential problems lie in malfunctions and/or potential damage caused by these parts:
• Engine block
• Thermostat
• Upper and Lower Hoses
• Radiator
• Radiator Cap
• Radiator Fan
• Water Pump
• Heater Core
• Heater Hoses
• Heater Blower Fan Motor
